In February 1892 when the ammunition was delivered it was found to be too small for the gun and after a considerable amount of correspondence the Gun was examined by Ordnance Store Department when a report by an Armourer sergeant, which was supported by the Senior Ordnance Store Officer, after shewing the defects in the Gun stated as follows –
"The gun in my opinion it would cost more to repair than it is worth."
It then transpired that the gun barrelled gun purchased by the Government was not the one which had been previously examined by the Senior Ordnance Store Officer. The gun he had seen at Messrs Gilmans was a five-barrelled gun.
The result is that the gun purchased in October last for $642 too has been sold for $1100 at a loss to the government of $520.
